Title: Tabla Beat Science- Devotional
Description: Just a quick vid i made today, thought it'd share it. Great group. Tabla Beat Science Tala Matrix Axiom Records/Palm All Rights Reserved Tala Matrix began as a collaboration between tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and New York-based musician and producer Bill Laswell in an effort to create new fusions of Indian classical rhythms with modern electronic beats. The project has since expanded to incorporate new work from Talvin Singh - a founding member of London's South Asian DJ underground and recipient of the UK's Mercury Prize in 1999, as well as a tabla virtuoso in his own rite - and Bombay native Trilok Gurtu, whose own signature tabla and percussion style has graced recordings with John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, violinist L. Shankar and many more. Also featured are Ustad Sultan Khan, world-renowned as a vocalist and soloist on the multi-stringed sarangi, and tabla/drummer/composer Karsh Kale, Tabla Beat Science: Tala Matrixwho has gained a strong following throughout North America as through his Six Degrees Assian Massive debut "Realize". Tala Matrix was released on Bill Laswell's Axiom label in mid-September 2000 and distributed through Chris Blackwell's Palm Pictures/Ryko distribution network. A live show of this magnitude, with universally acclaimed Indian classical musicians playing in an electronic context with live drums, bass, DJs and mixers, has never before been properly performed. It is unusual for Zakir Hussain and Sultan Khan to even consent to such an event, given that they normally perform in a classical or, at the extreme, in a jazz atmosphere. Zakir enjoys a huge draw among the South Asian community and among classical and jazz fans in general; with the more avant-garde and underground club following that Bill Laswell and Karsh Kale have built over the years, a "Tabla Beat Science" live show with these names alone can easily generate a massive buzz in any live musical festival environment. With the added participation of Sultan Khan and a few additional DJs and musicians from New York who understand the cross-cultural references shared by traditional Hindustani and urban electronic music, the show could just as easily become a milestone in the live presentation of "world fusion" music from a South Asian perspective. On August 13th, 2001 Tabla Beat Science performed to a capacity crowd of 13,000 people at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco, California. The live recording of the concert will be released in its entirety in the Spring of 2002 by Palm Pictures. The concert consisted of TBS core memebers Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Bill Laswell and Karsh Kale; along with special guests, the MIDIval Punditz from New Dehli on laptop, DJ Disc on turntables, Fabian Alsultany on synthesizers, and Ethiopian singer Gigi.

Title: Tabla Beat Science- Palmistry
Description: Call it an aggregation of some of the best contemporary percussionists: Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, and Asian Underground star Talvin Singh combine under the sonic washes of producer Bill Laswell to show the possibilities of Indian percussion. It's definitely a beatfest, but one of subtlety, where what is being said isn't as important as the way it's being stated, and the dialogue between hands includes a lot of silences. Gurtu comes from a more jazz tradition, Hussein a classical background, and Singh represents the brash young things of the dance floor. Mostly Laswell leaves it to them to provide the sonic entertainment, which is as it should be with delicate swathes of sound barely intruding, just coloring the proceedings. While it's not for everyone, those who love Indian percussion in all its forms will find this album a complete joy. --Chris Nickson Tabla Beat Science Tala Matrix Axiom (www.axiom-records.com), Palm All Rights Reserved

Title: Bill Laswell: Axiom Sound System Musical Freezone (1 of 2)
Description: Throughout three decades, Bill Laswell has been a constant innovator, fusing seemingly disparate genres into a whole new sound. Touching upon everything from worldbeat, funk, rock, hip-hop and jazz, there are no limits to his experimental approach. No matter what the project, one thing remains a constant - Laswell's pretty basslines provide a rhythm to which all sounds connect beautifully. The Grammy winner is one of the most prolific artists in modern music, fronting his own band Material and serving as producer, label owner and performer on other's albums. He has worked with many respected artists, including Herbie Hancock, Mick Jagger, Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono and Laurie Anderson. Among his many talents is his ability to bring together well-matched singers and players to create a distinct style that defies easy classification. His Soundstage episode embodies his unique approach, transcending any genre boundaries and delivering an engaging performance. From the World Beat of Tabla Beat Science, to the jazzy flavors of Pharoah Sanders backed by Material, it's an exciting mix. Other surprises include a rocking Buckethead set that includes a little breakdancing and songs by Praxis. The show culminates with an all-star performance, funked up by Bootsy Collins. more vids @ http://soundgasms.blogspot.com/

Description: Have you ever heard Tabla music? Yes? No? Maybe? I first heard Tabla music while searching for new music online. I found a group called Tabla Beat Science and got their album Tala Matrix . I was pleasantly surprised to find TablaCentric at Machine Project in Echo Park during our ritual Sunday breakfast in Echo Park/Silver Lake. TablaCentric is a month long project around Tabla, the traditional drums of North India that includes performances, film screenings, lessons and more. The project is facilitated by a fellow named Robin Sukhadia from the bay area. We had a chance to chat about Tabla and to catch him play for us for a minute or two.
