Description: At the time ELMER BERNSTEIN landed the assignment for 'The Magnificent Seven', he had already gained a reputation as a fine musician and innovater, showing much promise with the films, 'The Man with the Golden Arm' and 'The Ten Commandmants' to name just a few. Nowhere is his musical force more 'potent' than with this film score! Besides the beauty of each cue and motiff blending superbly within each sequence of the film (much like many Herrmann scores), his instrumentation immediately solidifies the story's atmospheric setting. On an emotional level, the robust thrust of the scores hugely abundant, melodic and rythmic ideas is the tool that prods the films pace and tension. Chicano flavored coloring and the fine use of the conga, bongos, Mexican log drums and guitar all add to the overall brilliance of the music. Bernstein had a fine relationship with the films producer, John Sturges, and not including Yul Brynner, the film literally launched the careers of Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Eli Wallach. It would be safe to say that 'The Magnificent Seven' is the best known, if not the finest film score that Bernstein ever wrote!
