Description: PLAYING: STEVEN JESSE BERNSTEIN - COME OUT TONIGHT (RARE)
Sub Pop 200 is a compilation released in the early days of the Seattle grunge scene (December 1988). It features songs (many of them first releases and otherwise unattainable) from Tad, The Fluid, Nirvana, Steven Jesse Bernstein, Mudhoney, The Walkabouts, Terry Lee Hale, Soundgarden, Green River, Fastbacks, Blood Circus, Swallow, Chemistry Set, Girl Trouble, The Nights and Days, Cat Butt, Beat Happening, Screaming Trees, Steve Fisk, and The Thrown Ups. Many of these bands went on to be incredibly influential in the early 1990s and onwards. Most notable of these were Nirvana, Soundgarden, Green River (who spawned Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone and late Temple of the Dog and Pearl Jam), Screaming Trees, and Mudhoney. The cover is an illustration by comics artist Charles Burns, who was regularly used by Sub Pop for covers and posters around this period.

Title: Sweet Blossom
Description: Seduction comes in many forms. Those who can seduce with style make it seem effortless, unintentional, irresistible. Robin Stine's music seduces with a whiff of subtle perfume and a casual graze of her hand as she walks past, leaving the listener powerless to do anything but follow. As a singer, her voice floats on the stylish edge of contemporary cool—light, but never lightweight. As a songwriter, her enchanting originals set her in the upper echelon of today's songwriters.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Robin began her musical journey as a child singing in school groups and church choirs. When she left for college she had no idea that music would take her around the world. For three of her collegiate years she performed with gospel groups, traveling across the U.S. as well as in Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Hong Kong and China. She then moved to Miami in 1996 to begin her graduate studies. During this time she performed with "Mike Suman's Swing City" and her own band "Simply Stellar" at festivals, hotels and clubs throughout South Florida. In 2003 she moved to Pensacola to focus on the next phase of her musical career—writing and recording her original music.
Her debut album Daydream is a sleek collection of a dozen original jazzy, bluesy numbers that immediately sound like comfortable standards. The melancholy title track "Daydream", the only co-write on the album, was written with Chris Whiteman at the University of Miami. The album's other originals were written over a six-month period while Robin rebuilt her home in the wake of Hurricane Ivan. "These songs are very personal. They were gifts from 'the muses' of genuine emotion, faith and hope—and they're my gift to the world."
Her opening track "Don't I Know" is a playful tune about finding happiness within, which according to Robin is "Something that most people struggle with in life, but the only way to enjoy it." The album also features the bittersweet tune "Half My Heart", a song she wrote about being separated from the one you love, while the flirty "Sweet Blossom" is about love's anticipation. "Never Say Goodbye" is a sultry tune where Robin conveys by her own admission, "Life can be more fun if you let yourself be naughty sometimes." As one of Robin's favorite jazz songs and the only cover on the album, she includes the haunting "Nature Boy", by Eden Ahbez.
Under the guidance of producer Mark Bingham, who's worked with everyone from Dr. John to the Blind Boys of Alabama to the Black Eyed Peas, she's assembled an enviably experienced crew including pianist Warren Bernhardt (Steps Ahead, Jack DeJohnette, Gerry Mulligan), drummer Gary Burke (Joe Jackson, Bob Dylan), trumpeter Steven Bernstein (Roswell Rudd, Medeski Martin & Wood, Don Byron), and her fellow Kansas City native, guitarist Steve Cardenas (Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux, Paul Motian, Mark Isham).
A lifelong love of performing inspired by family and further fueled by the completion of her album, have culminated in a desire to return to the touring stage after a rebuilding period in the post-Hurricane Ivan year. Now based in Pensacola, Florida, Robin is ready to follow the upcoming release of Daydream with a festival and club scene tour in a way that will also leave the world powerless to do anything but follow.

Title: music by ELMER BERNSTEIN: "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" (1960)
Description: At the time ELMER BERNSTEIN landed the assignment for 'The Magnificent Seven', he had already gained a reputation as a fine musician and innovater, showing much promise with the films, 'The Man with the Golden Arm' and 'The Ten Commandmants' to name just a few. Nowhere is his musical force more 'potent' than with this film score! Besides the beauty of each cue and motiff blending superbly within each sequence of the film (much like many Herrmann scores), his instrumentation immediately solidifies the story's atmospheric setting. On an emotional level, the robust thrust of the scores hugely abundant, melodic and rythmic ideas is the tool that prods the films pace and tension. Chicano flavored coloring and the fine use of the conga, bongos, Mexican log drums and guitar all add to the overall brilliance of the music. Bernstein had a fine relationship with the films producer, John Sturges, and not including Yul Brynner, the film literally launched the careers of Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Eli Wallach. It would be safe to say that 'The Magnificent Seven' is the best known, if not the finest film score that Bernstein ever wrote!

Title: Jean Carne - Was That All It Was
Description: Singer Jean Carne's career has had various incarnations, as well as a slight name change similar to Dionne Warwick's (adding an "e" to the end of her last name as Warwick did for a short time). Born Sarah Jean Perkins in Columbus, GA, she was raised in Atlanta. She began singing gospel music in the church choir at age four; she also took piano lessons and learned the clarinet and bassoon. Carne won a music scholarship to Morris Brown College and began her recording career in 1969 with her husband, keyboardist Doug Carn, on the Black Jazz label, where she was one of the last vocalists to work with jazz legend Duke Ellington before his death.
Carne popped up several times during the early-to-mid-'70s, singing with Earth, Wind & Fire on two albums, recording several times with Norman Connors, and reaching the charts via George Duke's hit single "Reach for It." In 1977, Carne was signed to Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International Records; her debut album, Jean Carn, was a classy affair that merged the best of '70s soul and jazz with solid songwriting and tight instrumental support (MFSB, Instant Funk). The debut single "Free Love" went to number 23 R&B. Though the follow-up single didn't chart, several of the album's tracks received considerable radio airplay, and some tracks made the disco charts. In June 1978, her second album for the label was released; Happy to Be With You included the hit single "Don't Let It Go to Your Head."
Carn's final Philadelphia International album, 1980's When I Find You Love, was more of a return conceptually (musically and sonically) to Jean Carn. Produced by Dexter Wansel, the album rates as one of Carne's best efforts. The smooth and halting "My Love Don't Come Easy" peaked at number 35 R&B. Released in August 1981, Carne's Sweet and Wonderful featured a remake of the Spinners' "Love Don't Love Nobody," which went to number 35 R&B. Carne moved to Motown Records in 1982, making her label debut with the album Trust Me. The single "If You Don't Know Me By Now," a cover of the Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes hit with backing vocals by the Temptations, went to number 49 R&B.
By 1986, Carne signed to Omni Records; Closer than Close was released in July of that year and the title track that went to number one R&B. Her 1988 album You're a Part of Me included a hit cover of Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way." Carne later signed with Place One Entertainment, which reunited her with former Omni Records president Steve Bernstein, with her Love Lessons album being distributed by PPI/Peter Pan. Carne continues to tour with Connors, among others, and makes her home in Atlanta. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide
