Description: 1349 is a black metal band hailing from Oslo, Norway. The band's music is purposely similar in style and construction to that of bands from the Second Wave of Norwegian black metal of the early 1990s. This is my fan-made tribute to a great band. The song used in the video is by 1349. It is called "Riders of the Apocalypse", and is from the album "Liberation". The name 1349 comes from the year the Bubonic plague (or black plague) reached Norway.

Description: A long little video of 1349 (the band), depicting a few drawings/paintings that are related to the black plague. The Black Death is estimated to have killed 30% to 60% of Europe's population. A time of gloom and doom. The 14th century eruption of the Black Death had a drastic effect on Europe's population, irrevocably changing the social structure. It was a serious blow to the Roman Catholic Church, and resulted in widespread persecution of minorities such as Jews (many were burned alive, illustrated by one of the drawings in the video), foreigners, beggars, and lepers. The uncertainty of daily survival created a general mood of morbidity. Bodies were thrown left and right by people who did not care to die, in order to bury them. Bodies overflowed the cemeteries, and soon it amassed to giant holes in which they were thrown in, piling one on top of the other. Many bodies were burned, due to there being no space to place them. Many religious folk turned to the whipping of oneself to atone for sins after being disillusioned by the church for their reactions to the plague. All in all, it was one of the most fascinating time periods of widespread chaos to have ever existed. The songs used for this video were 1349's "I Am Abomination", and "Sculptor of Flesh". Both from their "Hellfire" album. Try to enjoy it...

Description: By Nina Simone's own admission, this was her first civil rights song. It was inspired by the murder of four girls in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church on 15 September 1963 by members of the Ku Klux Klan. I think this is by far one of the most powerful protest songs of the time... "do things gradually will bring more tragedy"... even today! A very interesting paper on the involvement of Nina Simone in Civil Rights activism in the 60s was written by Ruth Feldstein in the Journal of American History. I'm not so sure youtube may be where students come looking for references but I've included the reference below anyway. Feldstein, R.
