Title: The Old City of Dresden, Germany * Měsíčku no nebi hlubokém (Song to the Moon) / Anna Netrebko
Description: Montage of scenes from the Old City (Altstadt) of Dresden, on the south bank of the River Elbe. Photographs were taken in mid-September, 2007. Dresden's famous Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) collapsed and crumbled after the tremendous fire bombing campaign by the Allies in mid-February 1945. A fragment of the stone dome of the Frauenkirche stands in the Altmarkt (Old Market) Square. The church itself stands today as a monument to the destruction and subsequent restoration of the city to elegance and beauty by the people of Dresden (with international help) after those tragic events. The Frauenkirche was rebuilt, the restored structure incorporating some thousands of original stones from the old church, and the renewed structure was finally opened in 2005. The famous Dresden State Opera, the Semperoper, was left in its post-war bombed state for several decades until it was finally restored by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It opened its doors once more in 1985. The opera house needed work once again after damage caused by the overflowing Elbe in August 2002, and reopened in December of the same year. Some important operatic works of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss, among others, had their world premieres at the Semperoper. MUSIC: Aria from Antonín Dvorák's 'Rusalka': Měsíčku no nebi hlubokém (Song to the Moon). Sung in the original Czech by Russian soprano Anna Netrebko Wiener Staatsopernchor Wiener Philharmoniker, directed by Gianandrea Noseda. From 'Opera ...
