Title: Free Your Mind, Dutch House Music Documentary [1/5]
Description: Early 90's documentary about house music in holland, featuring Dj Eddy de Clercq, Dano, Quazar and others..
There was actually a small riot when this came out because the documentary was made by the EO, a dutch conservative religeous broadcasting group, but when they interviewed everyone they pretended to be a different broadcasting group because the people interviewed probably wouldnt cooperate then, if you watch the last video you'd probably understand why... Needless to say they were quite pissed..

Quazar
Real Name: Gert Van Veen, Erik van Putten, Farida Merville, Daphne Mollee
Profile: Quazar from Utrecht / Amsterdam, The Netherlands, initially consisted of MG = "Magic" Gert Van Veen and Erik van Putten AKA Eric Cycle. Both had played in a band before, but they were not all that successful in those days. In 1989, van Veen was a music journalist for a national newspaper, 'De Volkskrant'. He wrote some articles about "The New Dance Craze".
Together with the famous resident DJ of 'The Roxy' club in Amsterdam, Eddy De Clercq, he produced 'Pay The Piper' A-Men. It is generally argued to be the first Dutch house record, although Peter Slaghuis from Rotterdam was a pioneer too.
Van Putten, van Veen and De Clercq had their first underground hit with 'Dish & Tell' as House Of Venus, part of which was sampled by Prince. The first Quazar record was 'Seven Stars'. It was picked up by a broad audience (even mellow-oriented DJ's played it), but it was definitely a milestone for hard (euro) techno.
The second release, 'Here & Now', is also quite experimental. It features an intro by Urban Dance Squad guitar player René van Barneveld AKA Tres Manos. The remix edition features the often underestimated, slighty melodic techno tune, 'Midsummernightsdream'.
Quazar rose to "world fame in The Netherlands", when they were featured in the classic documentary, 'House gewoon uit je dak', in the Impact series by the Dutch VARA-television. They even managed to penetrate the booming market for (album) CD's. Their outstanding first album 'The Seven Stars' sold well over 10.000 copies.
Later attempts were made to appeal to a more general audience. Their tracks became more song-like in format, and vocals (by Farida Merville) got more emphasis. Unfortunately things didn't quite work out for them. Gert van Veen still uses the name Quazar for his projects.
Members: Daphne (2), Gert Van Veen (Erik van Putten & Farida Merville no longer part of the group)
The story of the original Seven Stars Track as told by Swinger: "The Seven Stars was made after eddy, Eric & Gert went to their label manager to let him hear some new tracks. It was House Of Venus's Dish & Tell which later on Prince took samples from for a track. He liked it but found the tracks to laidback and wanted the next Ep to be a little harder. Gert was feeling very offended by the comment of his masterpiece Dish & Tell. When gert came home he was furious and took a seat behind his keyboard. He thought: so you want rough ill give you rough! When the melody was finished he was relieved and the track was born. That night he had a dream about a six star constellation standing high in the sky. All of a sudden a seventh star was there. And that became the title: The Seven Stars. It came out the moment when the second wave of house music came. Seven Stars is build up from samples from gert's former rockband before he produced house music. If Seven Stars wouldn't be a succes they would form another project under a different name. The track still sounds fresh today and is still played by dj's like Michael Mayer and Ricardo Villalobos."
The series of Seven Stars tracks was basically three tracks in '91. You had The Seven Stars Original, Moon Turns The Tides, and Dragonfighters, which all retained a similar theme. They were extremely popular at the time and Quazar's greatest works.
Then some years later in '97, they released 3 updated remixes found on Superstition. Sadly for them, they never came close to reaching the great heights in popularity of the first 3 in the series.
