Jim has studied music in the US at the Berklee College of Music and Indiana University of PA. He then studied overseas, including tutelage in India (tabla drumming) as a student of Ustad Zakir Hussain & Nishikant Barodekar. Jim is a three-time Emmy Award nominee for his music for television, and has composed music for independent and IMAX films. Jim has also received a 2005 Telly Award for music composition. As the percussionist for Rusted Root (1993-2001), Jim helped define the great rhythm-based sound that would propel the band to gold and multi-platinum sales. Since exiting the band Jim has completed work on the project "big SILENCE", his debut CD, which incorporates the world-beat and American pop sounds. Jim's wife, singer songwriter Carol Lee Espy, co-wrote, co-produced and performed on Big Silence. Other great players on the project include Dave Brown & Eric Reibling (The Gathering Field), Dwayne Dolphin (Geri Allen, Wallace Roney, Don Byron, Oliver Lake), Lindsey Horner (Bill Frisell, Tommy Flanagan, Joey Baron, Dave Douglas), Pete Freeman and Dave Hanner (Corbin/Hanner Band) ... plus many other wonderful musicians.

Description: El contrabajista, Miguel Angel Chastang compagina en su juventud, sus dos vocaciones hasta el momento, los deportes (Chastang fue una destacada figura en el campo del atletismo nacional) y su inclinación artística hacia la pintura y arquitectura. Abandona dichos estudios en el tercer curso al encontrar su verdadera vocación: la música. Comienza a estudiar el contrabajo con David Thomas, natural de Detroit (EE.UU.). A partir de esta fecha la carrera profesional de Miguel Angel Chastang está marcada por una dedicación y constancia dignas de encomio. Como muestra de su trabajo en estos años queda una inmensa lista de actuaciones y grabaciones discográficas con prácticamente la totalidad de los jazzistas españoles, así como con extranjeros afincados en nuestro país. En 1980 participa en el XIV Festival Internacional de Montreux (Suiza) acompañando al pianista argentino Luis Vecchio. En 1983 resulta ganador con su "Miguel Ángel Chastang Quintet" de las Terceras Jornadas de Jazz de San Isidro. El premio consiste en la grabación de su primer disco Viriato Blue. Es esta su primera experiencia de gran éxito como líder de sus propios grupos. En 1984 funda en asociación con Jorge Sylvester un sexteto con el que graba su segundo LP "Magic Night". Queda reflejado en estas dos producciones su gran talento no solo como instrumentista sino también como compositor. En 1985 actúa en el Festival Internacional de Nancy (Nancy Jazz Pulsations) en representación española. Su depurada técnica, gran sensibilidad, incuestionable fuerza y sobre todo, su extraordinaria versatilidad, han convertido a Miguel Angel Chastang en una indiscutible primera figura del jazz español. En 1986 le es concedida la beca del "Comité Conjunto Hispano-Norteamericano para la Cooperación Cultural y Educativa" de dos años de duración para estudiar en Nueva York con el gran maestro del contrabajo Ron Carter. Instala su residencia en Harlem, trabajando con artistas de la talla de Eddie Henderson, Greg Bandy, Leon Thomas, Billy Saxton, Nat Dixon, Eddie Gladden (batería habitual de Dexter Gordon), Larry Willis (director musical del grupo "Blood, Sweat & Tears"), Junior Cook, Sonny Fortune, Jimmy Ponder, Gary Bartz, y Wallace Rooney entre otros. En 1991 regresa a España, donde se ve inmerso en distintos proyectos: TVE: "Jazz entre amigos" en 1988 con su trío: R. Gallon, al piano; T. Moreno, a la batería; en 1991 con su cuarteto: E. Henderson, a la trompeta; G. Bandy, e Horacio Icasto; en 1992, con su nuevo grupo: Chastang Explosión Band: Gary Bartz, Jimmy Ponder, Greg Bandy, Wallace Roney con el que graba en directo el disco " Live at Populart". Desde 1993 es miembro habitual de los cuartetos de jazz de Jorge Pardo y Pedro Iturralde y en 1997 colabora con Isaac Turienzo y el cuarteto de cuerda de los Virtuosos de Moscú con Arcadi Futer como primer violín. En la actualidad dirige su propio grupo, con el que grabó para Ingo Música el disco: "Miguel Ángel Chastang Quintet en el Central" Ha estudiado con músicos como David Thomas, Pedro Iturralde, Chuk Israel, Ted Daniel, Ray Brown, Thad Jones, Ed Summerline, David Del Tredice, Dave Holland, Ron Carter y cursado estudios en el City College of Music de la Universidad de Nueva York
