Video: raag Miyan Ki Todi by N. Rajam
Title: raag Miyan Ki Todi by N. Rajam
Description: Legendary violinist N. Rajam (sister of TN Krishnan, aunt of Kala Ramnath, mother of Sangeeta Shankar, all famous violinists) playing the morning raga Miyan Ki Todi (notice the beautiful morning surroundings: an old temple complex at the banks of the Ganges, with fishermen busy on the river and birds chilping in the background) in a beautiful poetic scene from the documentary film 'Benares, musiques du Gange' (Yves Billon, 1992 ; France). After many years of studying with legendary singer Omkarnath Thakur, N. Rajam completely revolutionized violin playing in North Indian Hindusthani music by introducing a new vocal (gayaki) style of playing. This is a downloadable excerpt from the website of Patrick Moutal, a great scholar in Indian Classical Music.

Description: Parvati, that is the daughter of the mountains (the Himalayas), is consort of Shiva, and is generally considered a benign goddess. She has been identified as a reincarnation of Dakshayani, Shivas first wife, who destroyed her by self-immolation because her father, Daksha, insulted Shiva. Parvati when depicted alongside Shiva appears with two arms, but when alone, she is shown having four arms, and astride a tiger or lion. She is also known by a number of other names, including Ambika (mother), Gauri (golden), Shyama (dark complexioned), Bhairavi (awesome) and Kali (black-colored). Hindus believe that bathing in Ganga remits sins and that dying in Kashi ensures release of a person's soul from the cycle of its transmigrations. Hindus regard Kashi as one of the Shakti Peethas, and that Vishalakshi Temple stands on the spot where Goddess Sati's earrings fell.[16]Hindus of the Shakti sect make a pilgrimage to the city because they regard river Ganga itself as Goddess Shakti. Adi Shankara wrote his commentaries on Hinduism here, leading to the great Hindu revival. Vaishnavism and Shaivism have always co-existed in Varanasi harmoniously. Art lovers and historians like Rai Krishnadas, his son Prof. Anand Krishna, musicians like Pt. Omkarnath Thakur,P t. Kishan Maharaj, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Mahadev Mishra and numerous others have kept the city alive to the spiritual aspect of fine arts apart from their ability to entertain. Numerous festivals are celebrated that preserve traditional styles of classical and folk culture. All night, open music concerts like ones organised at Sankat Mochan Temple, Hori, Kajri and Chaiti Mela, Budwa Mangal, are annual features that draw connoisseurs from all over.
