Title: History of Yellow Bird - Harry Belafonte, Lawrence Welk, Kingston Trio
Description: Yellow Bird was first recorded in 1957, but existed in other variations before that. Here are some early illustrations. 1) Kingston Trio - Yellow Bird 2) Harry Belafonte - Don't Ever Love Me - 1957 LP "Belafonte Sings Of the Caribbean", and on single with Mama Looka Booboo. 3) Lawrence Welk - Yellow Bird - 1961 hit People say that Harry Belafonte recorded and popularized this song. What has been lost in the years is that he recorded a different variation not titled Yellow Bird, but Don't Ever Love Me. But he worked closely with Norman Luboff, and led him to create the modern version of Yellow Bird in 1957. The Luboff Choir had it on a 1957 LP Calypso Holiday, the first recording of Yellow Bird. And I expect that's the Luboff Choir backing Belafonte here. They were both on RCA. The melody is based on the West Indian song Petit Oiseaux (Little Bird), later to become Choucoune. Apparently Choucoune was on an LP by Nina and Frederick. I haven't heard Choucoune yet. If you have it place it as a video response. Harry Belafonte had everything to do with bringing all this together in the 1950s. Yellow Bird charted three times in the US: The Mills Brothers #70 1959, Arthur Lyman #4 1961, Welk #71 1961.

The lyrics were written by Irving Mills, but as many versions are instrumental he is sometimes not listed. The song is variously seen as the first Latin jazz song or as a Mideastern influenced jazz song. Its "exotic" sound made it of interest to Exotica musicians so it was covered by both Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. It has appeared in two Woody Allen films, Alice and Sweet and Lowdown. Even rap musicians Redman and Busta Rhymes sampled the song heavily in their 1998 song "Da Goodness" (from Redman's album Doc's da Name 2000). A 52-page booklet--Do you like 'Exotica'' What is 'Tiki'' And how do the two relate to each other' Ten years after the publication of the 'Book Of Tiki,' with which Sven Kirsten unearthed the forgotten cult of Polynesian pop and defined the Tiki figure as its protagonist, the two genres are conclusively united in this CD.-- Having been fortunate to have met both (and seen perform) the two foremost practitioners of Exotica music, Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman before they joined the Big Luau in the Sky, urban archeologist Kirsten is now applying his vast knowledge of Tiki culture to throw new light on the themes and concepts of Polynesian pop. By assembling a cornucopia of songs and visuals that evoke the time of Tiki, when urban paradises harbored refugees from the grey workaday in almost every metropolis in America, this compilation brings the escapist fantasies of yesterday back to today's much too real world.-- Far from being a dry history lesson, this collection of rare eye candy imagery and wistful ...

This song is for Boys ... hahahaha The Cascades were an American vocal group best known for their hit single "Rhythm of the Rain" in 1963. In 1960, the Silver Strands were a group of United States Navy personnel serving on the USS Ticonderoga (AR-8) based in San Diego, California, who were led by drummer Jimmy Owens and played local shows. They recruited John Gummoe, and left the Navy to become The Thundernotes. Owens had the idea of performing rock and roll music with an exotic twist, along the lines of Arthur Lyman and Martin Denny. To help capture this new sound, they introduced an electric piano, and Gummoe became the group's lead singer. However, their first release was an instrumental on Bob Keene's Del Fi Records label called "Thunder Rhythm". It was not a hit and Keene left the group eventually becoming a successful songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee. At this point, the group's membership consolidated as John Gummoe (born John Claude Gummoe, 2 August 1938 ...
Title: Billie Holiday, Abe Lyman's Orch - I Cried For You (1936)
Description: Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 -- July 17, 1959) was an American jazz singer and songwriter. Nicknamed Lady Day by her sometime collaborator Lester Young, Holiday was a seminal influence on jazz, and pop singing. Her vocal style - strongly inspired by instrumentalists - pioneered a new way of manipulating wording and tempo, and also popularized a more personal and intimate approach to singing. Critic John Bush wrote that she "changed the art of American pop vocals forever." She co-wrote only a few songs, but several of them have become jazz standards, notably "God Bless the Child," "Don't Explain," and "Lady Sings the Blues." ----------------- Abe Lyman (August 4, 1897 - October 23, 1957) was a popular bandleader from the 1920s to the 1940s. He made recordings, appeared in films and provided the music for numerous radio shows, including Your Hit Parade. His name at birth was Abraham Simon Lymon. Abe and his brother Mike changed their last name to Lyman because they both thought it sounded better. Abe learned to play the drums when he was young, and at the age of 14 he had a job as a drummer in a Chicago café. Around 1919, Abe was regularly playing music with two other notable future big band leaders, Henry Halstead and Gus Arnheim in California. Lyman moved the band to New York in 1933 and his orchestra began appearing on Your Hit Parade in 1937. He recorded into the 1940s before dying in Beverly Hills. Billie Holiday, Abe Lyman's California Ambassador ...
