Video: Jason Long - Breezin - Phil Upchurch
Title: Jason Long - Breezin - Phil Upchurch
Description: Transcribed bass line of Phil Upchurch on the George Benson tune "Breezin" off the album of the same name. I've been waiting to transcribe this bass line and learn it correctly for years now. Needless to say that this bass line has been butchered by many a wedding band bass player (myself, most certainly included) for over 30 years now! Not only has the bass line been massacred, but the form as well. Believe it or not, this tune actually has a very specific form, and is very rarely followed. I used to play "Breezin" in old wedding bands as part of the set right before the bridal party would enter the room. The song would be frequently cut short so that we could start the "Bridal Party Entering the Ballroom" music, that included great hits such as "Call Me Al", "The Horse", "Theme to Rocky", "Almost Like Being In Love", "Come Fly With Me", etc etc. It is for this reason that we never learned the form correctly because the song was rarely played all the way through. Incidentally, this, and many other "wedding band" anomalies will be featured in my yet to be published book "Walkin Through The Kitchen". Anywhoo, here is the correct bass line played by the great Phil Upchurch.

Video: Jan Bradley - Mama Didn
Title: Jan Bradley - Mama Didn't Lie
Description: Jan Bradley (born Addie Bradley, July 6, 1943, Byhalia, Mississippi) was an American soul singer. Bradley grew up in Robbins, Illinois. She was noticed by manager Don Talty (who also managed Phil Upchurch) at a high school talent show. After graduating, she auditioned for Curtis Mayfield, and soon recorded the Mayfield-penned "We Girls", which became a hit regionally in the Midwest. Several singles followed, and another Mayfield song, "Mama Didn't Lie" (b/w "Lovers Like Me"), was released nationally in the U.S. by Chess Records in 1963 and hit #8 R&B and #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following the single's success, Mayfield and Chess got into a legal battle over the publishing rights to Mayfield's songs, and as a result Bradley was no longer able to work with him. She started writing her own songs and released several further singles on Chess. "I'm Over You" hit #24 R&B in 1965; other Chess releases included "Just a Summer Memory" b/w "He'll Wait on Me", "It's Just Your Way", and "These Tears" b/w "Baby What Can I Do". Bradley continued working with Talty after her arrangement with Chess ended, releasing singles for Adanti, Doylen, Spectra Sound, and Night Owl. Bradley stopped singing professionally in the early 1970s; she raised a family and became a social worker. Her records remained popular among devotees of Northern soul.

I'm playing some of the chord melody of "Misty" that Phil Upchurch gave me, a few other licks and runs, and some os "Steppin' Out". Just messin' around out a little convention here in LA with some musicians. Sadly, the original file is more hifi at 392MB, but this is the 11MB YouTube version. Enjoy the goods FWIW =)
