En cambio, escapó con el hombre que amaba, un jugador de Baseball del equipo nacional cubano. Tuvieron tres hijas y como en cualquier hogar cubano había música. No tenían dinero pero, pero tenían las voces de los padres de Omara, cantando en la cocina donde hacían sus vidas diarias. Ella recuerda sus canciones, incluida entre sus favoritas ?La Bayamesa? de Ernesto Grenet y Sindo Garay (también cantada por Compay Segundo en Buena Vista Social Club). Estas fueron sus primeras lecciones informales de canto y dichas canciones permanecen en su repertorio hoy en día. Su álbum debut en solitario fue ?Magia negra?, apareció en 1959. En este álbum cruza música cubana y jazz e incluye versiones de ?That Old Black Magic? y ?Caravan? de Duke Ellington. Luego del lanzamiento de su álbum en solitario, permaneció con el grupo y dos años más tarde estaba con ?Las De Aida? cantando en un hotel de Miami cunado la crisis de los misiles cubanos causo la ruptura de las relaciones con América y comenzó un largo periodo de aislamiento de Cuba, volvieron inmediatamente a casa. Continúo con Las De Aída hasta 1967. Año en que comenzó a dedicarse finalmente a su carrera en solitario. Omara representaba a Cuba en festivales internacionales a la vez que mantenía su alto nivel también es Cuba. La vida de esta importante intérprete de la música cubana fue llevada al celuloide por el cineasta Fernando Pérez en el documental Omara. Y su país ha reconocido su bella carrera musical y su aporte a la cultura cubana con la Orden Félix Varela de Primer Grado, que otorga el Estado cubano.
