Title: BUBLITCHKI yiddish song Ziggy Elman and the Barry Sisters
Description: Bublitchki Bagelach ...Russian yiddish song
in the famous recordings by the great yiddish-american trumpet player ZIGGY ELMAN
recorded in 1938 under Ziggy Elman and his
Orchestra, as well as the classic 1950s
yiddish vocal recording by The BARRY SISTERS.
Images of the famous Moscow Metro (subway
underground) and its palatial stations, built in the mid 1930s onwards.
0:01-1:15 Ziggy Elman , trumpet solo
1:16-3:08 The Barry Sisters, yiddish vocal
3:09-4:15 Ziggy Elman and Orchestra ( reed section)
4:16-6:18 The Barry Sisters, yiddish vocal
6:19-7:46 Ziggy Elman, trumpet solo
ZIGGY ELMAN
b. May 26, 1914, Philadelphia, PA, USA. d. June 26, 1968 Van Nuys, CA, USA.
né: Harry Finkelman
Theme: "And The Angels Sing" (MGM 10047) (also on a Bluebird record that isn't Elman's band)(BUBLITCHKI Bluebird label
B-10103-A)
Referring to this Bluebird recording, a site visitor has advised:
"Actually this is the original recording of "And The Angels Sing" before it had
lyrics. It was then known as "Fralach In Swing" and it is this title which appears
on early pressings. Later ones use "And The Angels Sing". The musicians are all
from the Benny Goodman band of the period as was Ziggy Elman himself and include
the complete reed section and Jess Stacy at the piano."
In December 1938, Elman was invited to start making some recordings which would be released as "Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra," but, in truth, his musicians
were actually all members of the Goodman band.
ZIGGY ELMAN's
talent, youthful exuberance and brashness came to the fore when Benny allowed him to interpolate Yiddish "Fralich-er" (Yiddish for 'happy-like') phraseology into his solos. The public simply adored this. Probably the best known example of Ziggy's style is Benny's recording of "And The Angels Sing" - as popular today as when it was first 'laid down on wax'.
While with Goodman he recorded 20 sides for the Bluebird label. Although the labels indicate "Ziggy Elman and His Orchestra" these records actually have Elman leading a band made up of members of Goodman's orchestra.
How popular was Ziggy? He won the Downbeat Magazine's Poll for Best Trumpet in 1940 and '41, 1943 through 1945 and again in 1947. Many people thought Ziggy to be the world's greatest trumpet player

BAGELS! HOT BAGELS!
Come-and-get my bagels
Hot bagels, hot rolls
It's almost night now
Here I stand deep in thought
See, how dark my eyes are!
It's freezing out here
My hands are frozen stiff
This sad song comes out of
My desperate troubles!
So! Come-and-get my bagels!
Hot bagels! Hot rolls!
My last few bagels
So! Come-and-buy my bagels!
Here I stand all-alone in the street
Soaked through by the rain
So! Come-and-buy my bagels
Night has fallen. There's no light left.
Here I stand thinking
What's gonna be?
There's nothing but pain at home
I'm so hungry, I'm about to faint
Dear folks, hear my song
I'm so hungry I'm about to faint
So! Come-and-buy my bagels
My last few bagels!

""Bublichki" (Bagels) is a Jewish song from the 1920s Odessa.
The city became the home of a large Jewish community during the 19th century, and by 1897 Jews were estimated to comprise some 37% of the population....
In 1920s Odessa was still the Yiddish capital of Russia. In Russia the town is famous for its sense of humour and Jewish accent ".

THE BARRY SISTERS (aka The Bagelman Sisters)
(from Wikipedia)
¨Barry Sisters
Born in the Bronx, New York, Clara and Minnie Bagelman were first known as the Bagelman Sisters. As Claire and Myrna Barry they were popular Yiddish jazz singers made popular in the 1940s-1960s on the New York Radio Show "Yiddish Melodies in Swing", where they would sing swing versions of Yiddish and popular American songs. During the height of their popularity, they even made appearances on the Ed Sullivan show, and were one of the few American acts to tour the former Soviet Union in 1959. Although Myrna Barry died in 1976, Claire Barry continues to sing and perform, and was recently featured in the NPR radio show, "Yiddish Melodies in Swing", an exhibit of the Yiddish Radio Project web site.¨
¨¨
¨The Barry Sisters began performing when they were children and were first called ¨The Begelman Sisters. As they grew older, thjey changed their stage name to The Barry Sisters. they began performing in the New York Catskills resort hotels, and became so popular that they became one of the biggest acts of the Yiddish theater circuit thrilling audiences from New York to Miami Beach. They toured and appeared with Mickey Katz (father of Joel Gray of Cabaret fame.) They became so popular that they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Television Show and were wacthed by millions of Americans. They later toured all of Europe and they were the first group of their kind to appear in the Soviet Union and were one of the most popular acts there as Russian Jews throughout the world wanted to hear their recordings. Many of these Yiddish songs were brought to America at the time of the huge wave of emigration of Eastern European Jews ¨
The Barry Sisters were very popular in the
jewish resorts of the CATSKILLS and MIAMI
BEACH. When Barbra Streisand began her
career, she also worked at these resorts,
such as her performances at the EDEN ROC
in Miami Beach´s Collins Avenue, and at the
Concord Hotel in Kiamesha Lake; New York
Catskills. I wonder if Barbra met the Barry
Sisters?
FAR FROM THE HOME I LOVE ( Lyrics)
what a melancholy choice this is,
Wanting home, wanting him,
How can I hope to make you understand
Why I do what I do,
Why I must travel to a distant land,
Far from the home I love.
Once I was happily content to be
As I was, where I was,
Close to the people who are close to me,
Here in the home I love.
Who could see that a man would come
Who would change the shape of my dreams.
Helpless now I stand with him,
Watching older dreams grow dim.
Oh, what a melancholy choice this is,
Wanting home, wanting him,
Closing my heart to ev'ry hope but his,
Leaving the home I love
Love, love....
Who could see that a man would come
Who would change the shape of my dreams.
So helpless now I stand with him,
Watching older dreams grow dim.
Oh, what a melancholy choice this is,
Wanting home, wanting him,
Closing my heart to ev'ry hope but his,
Leaving the home I love
Far from the home I love,
Leaving the home I love
Yet there with my love I'm home.

Title: HALEVAI - Moishe Oysher and The Barry Sisters
Description: Halevai- yiddish song
"Moishe Oysher (1907, Lipkany, Bessarabia, Imperial Russia — 27 November 1958, New Rochelle, New York, USA).[1] He is considered one of the most entertaining chazanim (cantors) ever recorded. It is said that there were chazanim in his family going back six generations.
In 1921, he traveled to Canada with his family and joined a traveling Yiddish theatrical company. In 1932. he started his own company and traveled to South America. After returning from South America to the U.S., he took a job as a chazan for the High Holidays at a Romanian synagogue in New York.
Some say that Oysher's voice was like the "roaring of the lion." He liked the jazz style, popular at that time, and he used similar rhythmic melodies in his prayers, respecting always the traditional Bessarabian "Doinas" and "Nussach" moods of the prayers.
He starred in three Yiddish films and also made many recordings.
Filmography
The Cantor's Son (Dem Khazn's Zindl) 1937, USA, B&W, 90 min, Yiddish with English subtitles. ISBN 1-56082-079-9
Directed by Ilya Motyleff and Sidney Goldin. Other actors: Judith Abarbanel and Florence Weiss. Based on Moishe Oysher's life. A very poor young immigrant lands a job as a custodian, where he is "discovered" and becames famous immediately. However, his success seems meaningless as he yearns for home.
The Singing Blacksmith (Yankl der Shmid; the Yiddish title literally means "Yankel the Smith") 1938, USA, B&W, 95 min, Yiddish with English subtitles. ISBN 1-56082-085-3
Directed by Edga G. Ulmer. Also with Miriam Riselle and Florence Weiss. This is a classic story of a blacksmith that is a womanizer and almost an alcoholic. One day, he meets a beautiful lady called Tamare and his life changes.
Overture to Glory (Der Vilner Shtot Khazn; the Yiddish title literally means "The Vilna City Cantor") 1940, USA, B&W, 85 min, Yiddish with English subtitles. ISBN 1-56082-063-2
Directed by Max Nosseck. Starring Helen Beverly and Florence Weiss. Oysher is the "Vilner Balabesl", a cantor in Vilna, with a renowned voice. Two men come from the Warsaw Opera to hear him sing the "Kol Nidre" on Yom Kippur and are so impressed that they introduce him to European classical music and to reading sheet music; they convince him, against the wishes of much of his family (and especially his father-in-law) to become an opera singer in Warsaw.
He leaves his job as the Vilna cantor, and seems at first to be on the path to fame and fortune as an opera star in Warsaw, when the news arrives that his son has died. Grief-stricken, he stumbles over the aria he is supposed to sing, starting instead into a lullaby he used to sing to his son. In disgrace, he also loses his voice; he tries to return to his life in Vilna; finally, his voice comes briefly back to him on Yom Kippur. He sings the first few lines of the "Kol Nidre", then dies of a heart attack."

Emanu El, Beth El Synagogue, and the
Roumanian Congregation Synagogue. The
Beth El Synagogue located on Fith Avenue
and 76th Street was demolished in 1947. It
was one of the most beautiful synagogues.
Moishe Oysher (1907--1958) was a singularly charismatic Yiddish singer and cantor.
Freydele Oysher (1913--2004) was an actress in the Yiddish theater. (Moishe Oysher's sister and mother of entertainer Marilyn
Michaels).
Some notes on a Chanukah song by Moishe Oysher:
"1. Drey Dreydele
Moyshe Oysher (1907-1958) was a singularly charismatic Yiddish singer. Born in the Bessarabian village of Lipcany, and descended from seven generations of cantors, Oysher made his singing debut at the age of six. After emigrating to New York, Oysher's vocal talents - a combination of rich cantorial melismatic and Moldavian village scat - brought him simultaneous success on the bineh (the Yiddish stage) as well as the bimah (the cantorial podium), where he served as cantor at the First Rumanian-American Congregation on Rivington Street. Through such Yiddish films as "The Cantor's Son," "Overture to Glory" (The Vilner Balebessel), and "The Singing Blacksmith," Oysher would soon develop a worldwide following. Oysher's passionate performances mirrored his real-life reputation (chronicled in J. Hoberman's history of Yiddish film, Bridge of Light) as "a lusty skirt-chaser who drank, smoked, and didn't necessarily keep the Sabbath."
We learned this tune from Moyshe's sister Freydele, who still sings Yiddish in New York. Oysher's original recording of "Drey Dreydele" (Spin, Dreydl!) featured the virtuosic Dave Tarras on clarinet.
"Bring me bread, bring me wine - let's all celebrate! Latkes, meat, fish, white tablecloths, and a shining menorah. When Chanukah comes around, it's all good! So spin, dreydl - and bring us good fortune."

Title: Barry Mann - Who Put The Bomp
Description: Half of the successful writing team of Mann/Weil, songwriter Barry Mann played an integral part in the success of the Brill Building sound and its dominance of the pop charts in the early '60s. Before becoming a songwriter he also made the charts as a performer, singing the novelty song "Who Put the Bomp..." Mann began his career at Don Kirshner's Aldon Music. Crafting rock music with a level of sophistication that had never before been attained, Mann, along with wife and partner Cynthia Weil, wrote such classic tunes as "On Broadway," "You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling" ("the most played song of the 20th century"), and "Uptown." It was Mann who supplied the majority of the music for these compositions and the duo continued to provide hits for other artists through the decades. In addition to his continuing successful collaboration with Weil, Mann has provided keyboards and production skills to artists such as BJ Thomas and the Pointer Sisters, and co-wrote Dan Hill's hit "Sometimes When We Touch." In 1987, Mann was inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and was awarded two Grammys, including Best Song for "Somewhere Out There." His website is at www.mann-weil.com. ~ Steve Kurutz, All Music Guide

Title: Love Unlimited Orchestra/Barry White - Love's Theme...
Description: Fabulous track from 1974 which charted highly in the UK and broke many a heart on the dance floor in those heady days, which are now sadly passed and very much missed..
Poor Barry has gone too - what a loss to the world of music as a whole.. A loss to soul - and a kind loving soul of a man - a genius and a gem.. RIP Barry.
I reckon a few younger YT listeners will enjoy this too, as they find a new love in their lives - go for it! Barry was the master of love - he passed on.. His music never will - it is eternal.
Dedicated to my terminally ill stepfather who treated me like one of his own. My "real" father didn't want to know! God bless you, my friend xx Also dedicated to my sister Caroline - a 'rock' throughout my life! Thanks babe!
The two 'posy' pics at the end are of me - sorry if it puts a few off! lol...
Title: ROTARY CONNECTION-"I AM THE BLACK GOLD OF THE SUN" (1971)
Description: "Soul Sisters triumphant!": From Psychedelia to Funk, 1967-1975.
The human race started from Africa. When drought hit, around 24 members of the Bushmen tribe set out into the unknown for food. The global journey of their generations seeded the entire planet over the next 50,000 years. These two dozen Africans created every one of us. We are all family, we've just forgotten it.
In the 1950's, sparked by Rosa Parks, the Civil Rights movement challenged segregation. The resulting 60's Counterculture meant to free the mind, body, and spirit from any shackles. They embraced the tribal and the communal, the future and each other. The late 60's-early 70's was a golden age of connection and exploration opening the possibilities that created the best in the world we now live in. This is a story of our shared jouney we shouldn't forget.
Here are many Soul Sisters who paved our path: LT. UHURA opened the future on "Star Trek"; the tribal Rock musical HAIR personified the re-evolution, which also gave us Melba Moore, Donna Summer, Leata Galloway, Marsha Hunt, Ben Vereen, Phillip Michael Thomas, and many more; all-inclusive music groups like BOOKER T & THE MG's, SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, ROTARY CONNECTION, JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, The Loading Zone, Santana, and The Chambers Brothers; new world couples like Jimi Hendrix and Devon Wilson, Brian Jones and Donyale Luna; activist singers like NINA SIMONE; Native American and African clothes and hairstyles were reborn; this opened the door for MIRIAM MAKEBA and other World Musics into the mainstream; MARSHA "Brown Sugar" HUNT set the template for Betty Davis and the next decade of Funk Rock women; MILES and BETTY DAVIS stirred Funk and Psychedelia into the Fusion Jazz of "Bitches Brew"; by '69, the Fashion industry was opened by JOLIE JONES, NAOMI SIMS, DONYALE LUNA, Carole La Brie, Beverly Johnson, Jane Kennedy, and African ELIZABETH OF TORO; as Feminism dawned in the early 70's, ELAINE BROWN took command of the generally sexist Black Panther Party while ANGELA DAVIS fought The Man; modern poet/authors like NIKI GIOVANNI, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker inspired waves of new students; the new archetype of 'Soul Sister', with brains, class, style, and attitude, took its first proud strut; this modern amazon ruled the screens with actors like PAM GRIER, TAMARA DOBSON, CAROL SPEED (cutest eyes ever!), THERESA GRAVES, Vonetta McGhee, Jeane Belle, and Gloria Hendry; and in the comics with Wonder Woman's sister, NUBIA, and feiry STORM of the X-MEN.
These women created: bohemian musicians like Ruth Copeland, Funkadelic, Joyce Kennedy (Mothers Finest), Parlet and Brides Of Funkenstein, Grace Jones, Prince & the Revolution, Public Enemy, the Native Tongues rappers, Lenny Kravitz, Cree Summer, Nenah Cherry, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Dionne Farris, Skin (Skunk Anansie), Erykah Badu, The Roots, Joi, Kelis, India Arie, Joss Stone, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Nikka Costa; World musicians like Osibisa, Fela, King Sunny Ade, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahotella Queens, Zap Mama, Cesaria Evora, Angelique Kidjo, and Antibalas; models like Naomi Campbell, Iman, Waris Dalie, and Alek Wek; activists like bell hooks, Sister Souljah, and Pam The Funkstress (The Coup); tough actors like Gina Torres (FIREFLY/ SERENITY), Halle Barry (CATWOMAN, X-MEN), and Jada Pinkett Smith (THE MATRIX); and superheroines like Vixen, Misty Knight, Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel), and Natasha Irons (Steel).
About ROTARY CONNECTION: The Chess label parlayed modern blues (Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf) and Rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley) in the 50's. Young heir Marshall Chess stirred them into the psychedelic 60's with the RC. It combined a rock group with soul singers, all arranged by the radical Charles Stepney with jazz changes, operatic chorales, electronic dissonance, and sweeping strings. It also introduced Minnie Ripperton, who went on to glory with "Loving You" later. Though Minnie has sadly passed, her daughter Maya Rudolph is a shining star on "Saturday Night Live". Stepney went on to arrange the great hits of Earth Wind & Fire. And Nuyorican Soul made "Black Gold" a modern standard with their 1997 remix hit.
Who is the black gold of the sun? We all are.

Title: Barry White - You`re the first, the last, my everything
Description: One of the most powerful songs ever.
Barry White still rules.
One of his best!!!!!
For me it is.
Barry White was born on September 12, 1944, in Galveston, Texas, and raised in South Central Los Angeles. He says he started singing at the age of four, he and his brother harmonizing to "Silent Night" with their mother.
When he was 18 years old, Barry White decided it was time to head to Hollywood, and make his mark on the world with his music. He dropped out of high school with only one semester left before graduation; That's how sure he was that he belonged in Hollywood.
Barry White struggled to make ends meet for the remainder of the sixties. But all that hard luck would change in the seventies. Barry, who was trying to make it as a writer, composer, and producer, met three girls, who had just arrived in Hollywood. Their names were Diane Taylor, and sisters Glodean and Linda James.
Barry formed the three into an all girl group, and named them "Love Unlimited". He groomed the girls for a few years, then in 1972, produced their debut album, "From a Girl's Point of View We Give to You". The album went gold, and included the hit single, "Walkin' in the Rain with the One I Love."
The following year, Barry released his own debut album, "I've Got So Much to Give" which also went gold, and included the hit single, "I'm Gonna Love Ya Just a Little More, Baby." Barry hadn't intended on doing the vocals for this album! In an interview, Barry explained how this album came to be:
"I started fooling around with the intro to one of the songs. Then another song, and another song... I was so excited when I went into the studio. I knew I needed to find a singer to sing these new songs. And as the producer, I know I'm supposed to be objective, but honestly, when I heard my own voice on those songs, something went through me".
Barry also had been working on forming a "soul" orchestra. In 1974 his newly formed, "Love Unlimited Orchestra", debuted with the top-10 album "Rhapsody in White". The album produced the hit single, "Love's Theme". That same year, the female trio of "Love Unlimited", also had a top-10 album, "Under the Influence of".
In fact, in 1974, all three of his groups,"Barry White", "Love Unlimited", and the "Love Unlimited Orchestra" had albums in the top-10 of the U.S. charts. Other seventies hits include "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe," (#1), and "You're the First, the Last, My Everything," (#2).
In 1975 Barry White and Glodean James married and settled down in Southern California. The couple was also riding high on the charts with several hit singles including "What Am I Going to Do with You", "I'll Do for You Anything You Want Me To", Love Unlimited's "I Belong to You", and the "Love Unlimited Orchestra's", "Satin Soul."
In 1977 Barry White reached the top-10 again with the album "Barry White Sings For Someone You Love", and the hit single "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me".
His nineties hit albums, include "Come On", "Practice What You Preach", and "Staying Power" for which Barry won his first two grammy awards: Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
Barry White also made several cameo appearances on the "Ally McBeal" television show; introducing a whole new generation of fans to the music of the sexy soulman of the disco era.
In 2002, it was announced that Barry White was suffering from kidney failure and hoping to find a donor for a kidney transplant. A year later, in May of 2003, it was reported that Barry suffered a speech-impairing stroke.
Barrence Eugene Carter died at July 4t 2003, Los Angeles, California, USA (kidney failure; hypertension)
